INTRODUCTION
The name "Jeduthun" in the preface of the psalm means "praising". He is mentioned in 2 Chronicles 5:12 "Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of Asaph, of Heman, of Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets." He is a Levite of the family of Merari and the chief of one of the 3 choirs of the temple whose descendants also formed one of the perpetual temple choirs; he is named at the beginning of 3 Psalms (Ps 39 ,Ps 62 ,Ps 77 ) either as the composer or the recipient of those Psalms but most likely as the leader of the choir by which those Psalms were to be sung. (Strong's, BDB)
The ministry of "Jeduthun" is described here as a seer who waited at the gate that they may not depart from their service. Here is described a picture of disciplined steadfastness in waiting upon the king's orders. This is observed in 2 Chronicles 35:15 "And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them."
The resolution of the psalmist is to wait in faith for God's salvation. V8 is introduced with the "asserverative", emphasizing the expression of a truth or supposed truth newly perceived. “Truly” means “surely, no doubt” (BDB). He has no doubt in his heart the faithfulness of God to deliver him from his trouble. He recommends His good God to his audience in a succinct summary in verse 8 ,“Trust in Him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before God: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
The word "wait" "דּוּמִיָּה" "dumiyyah" has the sense of being "silence, still waiting, repose" (BDB). It is a feminine noun denoting silence, a quiet wait, in silence, rest. It indicates a time of silence in the sense of rest (Psalm 22:2 ) or a self-imposed period of silence in the presence of evil persons (Psalm 39:2 ). Here it indicates a time of reverential silence and patience as one waits for God (Psalm 62:1 ) or a period of awesome silence in anticipation of praise to the Lord (Psalm 65:1 ). (The Complete Word Study Dictionary of Old Testament)
In this fast moving world of technological advances and fast food, "waiting" is a misnomer. It doesn't seem to fit into our modern life style. "Impatience" seemed to be the mental attitude of this generation. How we need to learn to quieten down and be sure that in our "progress" in life, God is at the helm. The psalmist teaches us the need to be waiting in silence before God for from Him alone comes true salvation. The anxiety in the heart of the psalmist is given to God's care - replying upon His power (v 11 ) and waiting for His mercy (v 12a ). How necessary for the Christian to cultivate the inner man to rest in God always! God is also judge, man is weighed in the balance of God's laws (v 12b ). The self restraining spirit, the determination to seek no other help but God's, is the heart cry of practical theology.
The psalmist tells us the reason why his soul waits upon God.

A little girl and her father were crossing a bridge. She said to his daughter 'Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don't fall into the river.'
The little girl said, 'No, Dad. You hold my hand.' 'What's the difference?' The father asked. 'There's a big difference,' replied the little girl.
'If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let your hand go. But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go.'
Is this your relationship with your Father in heaven? This is the psalmist's testimony, when he says, "my soul waits upon God." So hold the hand of the Person who loves you though we know He will not fail to hold yours.
(1) The Trustworthiness of God (v 1-2 ,5-8 )
Notice the use of the "only" in v 5-6 to emphasize how the psalmist finds rest for his soul by looking solely to God.
God is:-
(a) My Salvation (v 1b ,6a )
God is Israel's Rock manifested fully and finally by His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who purged our sins and give to us not only eternal life but victory over all our life's trials and temptations.
(b) My Rock (v 2a ,6a ,7b )
The Rock is the symbol of stability.
(c) My Defence (v 2b ,6b )
When attacked by his enemies, he found that God is able to protect him against the wiles of the enemy's darts.
(d) My Expectation (v 5b )
He rested his life in total submission for God to order and plan.
(e) My Glory (v 7a )
God is the originator of all that is glorious and honourable in his life.
(f) My Strength (v 7b )
The Holy Spirit gives renewal and refreshing in ways beyond our imagination when we tarry upon God.
(g) My Refuge (v 7c )
He is the place where I can flee for protection and security. There is safety in Him.
When the psalmist examine the credentials of man and himself or his possessions he is greatly disappointed.
He described man as unreliable - "as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence." (v 3b ) Unstable and liable to fall. The depravity in the heart of man caused God to judge the world with a global flood.
Application:
Remember Genesis 6:5 ,11-12 "And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually…The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence (hamas). And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth." The word for violence "hamas", was used for the first time in the Old Testament just before God announced judgment upon the earth by a global flood. This is a picture of God's judgment to come, this time it will be by fire. Today, there is a Palestinian resurgence movement called Hamas in Gaza, where violence via suicide bombing their way of life. Violence has proliferated in terrorist attacks around the world. Surely, the Lord's judgment must soon come.
(3) In my God is power, mercy and justice (v 11-12 )
The power of God is infinite, eternal and unchangeable. When we are connected with our God in doing His will, we see the manifestation of God's power in our lives. Where we have sinned against God and His Word, there is redress when we come to Him in contrition of heart and repentance, His mercy (unmerited favour) upon us never fails. He will forgive.
May we therefore be patient to wait upon our God, for in Him is our only help for salvation, present and eternal.
BE STILL MY SOUL
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessèd we shall meet at last.
Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, believing, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine
Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine.
